The case for UV tanning

If you’ve ever seen someone who had stayed in a tanning booth for too long, you may be impossible to sway on your aversion to indoor tanning. In all fairness, people bake under the sun for too long all the time also – the effects are exactly the same. What most people don’t know though is that indoor tanning can actually yield great benefits to those who partake in the fifteen minutes of exposure to the UV blasting chambers. While being exposed to UV rays for any great amount of time comes with risks, those risks aren’t as dangerous as they’ve been rumored to be. In fact, the long laundry list of benefits to indoor tanning could outweigh the negatives once you’re well informed about what good tanning can do for the body and skin.

First let’s clarify why tanning is a process through which your body can benefit. Exposure to either the sun’s or a tanning booth’s UV rays helps your body produce vitamin D. Vitamin D itself has been attributed to the prevention of plenty of diseases including colon cancer, depression, high blood pressure, breast cancer, fibromyalgia, prostate cancer, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), PMS, arthritis, psoriasis, diabetes and osteoporosis. While it may be hard to believe that ‘fake baking’ can help in the prevention of all of these diseases, it’s important to remember one thing: the only way that your body can produce vitamin D is by absorbing UV rays and converting them into this essential vitamin. It’s not uncommon to find debilitating, terminal illnesses and depression rampant in areas that stay very cloudy and rainy through most of the year. Maybe all that’s needed is a little fake sun from time to time!

Ovary and kidney cancer are also linked to a lack of vitamin D according to Dr. Michale Holick, professor at Boston University’s School of Medicine. His plea is that brief amounts of sunshine or indoor tanning can ward off the aforementioned list of diseases as well as ovary cancer, kidney cancer, hypertension, bladder cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. While simply hearing that vitamin D has been proven to prevent some diseases is one thing, hearing it directly from the doctor’s mouth is quite another. Dr. Holick does say specifically that ‘limited’ amounts of sun or tanning is appropriate – when it’s boiled out, most indoor tanners would fit his definition better than sun tanners. Tanners fall asleep on the beach for hours claiming that the sun is natural and won’t hurt them whereas tanning facilities are on strict watch to ensure that their patrons don’t extend past the fifteen minute tanning session recommended by the indoor tanning companies and the FDA.

The FDA actually regulates the indoor tanning industry and requires that precautions and warnings be explained prior to anyone getting into a tanning booth. These warnings include the recommended maximum exposure levels which some tanning booths take to heart and make their policy as well as requiring that detailed operating instructions for the tanning booths that customers will be lying in be provided prior to first use. These precautions are taken in order to prevent overexposure. Another unique fact is that most herbal remedies such as St. John’s Wart and Ginseng are not FDA approved or regulated. When it comes to government control, tanning booths are safer than most holistic remedies!

Despite the great effects that vitamin D has on the body and putting aside the fact that indoor tanning is regulated by a strict government agency, let’s discuss how tanning itself can benefit a tanner simply on the basis of heat and UV rays being applied to the skin. Tanning is a great option for folks who’ve had cosmetic or invasive surgery of any kind. Through darkening of the skin it is entirely possible for a tanner’s scars to begin blending in with the rest of their body color. This same mechanic holds true for mothers with birthing stretch marks or awkward teens who’ve suffered bad cases of stretch marks during puberty. In addition to masking scars, tanning dries oils on the body. Guess where acne comes from – oils on the skin! If you’ve suffered from a bad case of acne and tried everything but indoor tanning, get to a booth because the solution may clear your face as well as get you a great looking tan. In addition to acne, the drying of one’s skin of oils has helpful effects for a few other skin conditions as well. Eczema, psoriasis (as mentioned before) and even jaundice can all be treated effectively by a regimen of controlled, indoor tanning. Jaundice is a condition where skin coloration becomes yellowed and unsightly: tanning of course will darken the skin over time and result in a more natural coloration for the affected patient. Eczema is an inflammation of the epidermis and regular indoor tanning has also been known to reduce flare-ups of itchy, dry and flaky skin associated with the illness. Aside from all of these great side-effects of tanning indoors, there is one reason to tan that could outshine all the rest.

When you bake under ultra-violet light, your body undergoes a number of changes, but only one that occurs in the thyroid gland is of particular concern to most Americans, according to the World Health Organization. According to the WHO, obesity has become a surging problem not just in the United States (though most obesity cases worldwide are found in the US) but across the world. Surprisingly enough, regular exposure to UV light will stimulate the thyroid gland which is responsible for balancing the metabolism of the body. While most obese individuals hole themselves inside, being outdoors in the sun or in extreme cases of obesity having an at-home tanning booth custom made in their size, can actually increase metabolism which would in turn help in losing weight. Metabolism is the process by which the body turns food into energy. Those with high metabolisms are usually envied for their slim figures. In truth, the thyroid is the gland responsible for leaving large people large and skinny people skinny. With a solid schedule of indoor tanning it’s possible to tickle this gland into working overtime and increasing your body metabolism overall.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Is treatment suitable for anyone?

The redlight treatment is harmless and is suitable for all skin types. People with low blood pressure or who are pregnant, suffer from epilepsy or increased light sensitivity, or are on medication that causes increased light sensitivity (e.g. antibiotics or St. John?s Wort) should, however, refrain from the treatment. For the first treatment a lower dose is recommended, to test for any adverse reaction.

The Vibra-shape training should not be carried out immediately after an operation or if recently wounded, if you have heart/hip and bone problems, during pregnancy, with bone implants, acute thrombosis, gallstones or kidney stones, or during an acute illnesses or inflammation. If you suffer from diabetes, strong migraines, have a tumour or skin cancer or in other case where there is doubt, please consult your doctor.

How long is each treatment?
The treatment should last between 10?20 minutes on average. The best results are obtained from a treatment that always lasts 20 minutes. We recommend a break of 48 hours between treatments.

What is collagen?
Collagen is the most important protein in our body. It is a fundamental building block of connective tissue and is found not only in the skin, but also in tendons, joints, ligaments, bones, blood-vessel walls - and even in the cornea in the eye. As it is collagen that determines the firmness of connective tissue, it is also called the body's "filler". Sufficient collagen content is therefore the main requirement for skin to have a firm appearance - and indeed the whole body. But collagen is also vitally important for the health of bones, tendons, joints, ligaments etc.

How can I reach my goals?
Most users report a relaxing effect and a fresher, softer skin even after just the first few treatments. For the best results it should be used regularly over a longer time period.
Depending on the reason for the treatment, various different treatment plans can be recommended:
For youthful skin with the aim of toning the skin, reducing impurities and protection from environmental factors 10 treatments may be enough. To freshen the skin and combat the first signs of skin aging about 20 treatments should be applied over two months. For more mature skin, and to actively combat skin aging and wrinkles, about 30 treatments over three months are commended.
Of course recommended treatment plans may vary in individual cases. Results can be further improved by the additional use of top quality skincare products. Ideally you should support your treatment by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you get enough sleep, cut out smoking, eat a balanced diet and drink at least two litres of water per day. You will see - your body and skin will thank you for it!

Do I need to protect my eyes?
Because of the bright light you should keep your eyes closed during the treatment. Wearing sunglasses helps to make the process more comfortable.

Can normal sun cosmetics be used together with Beauty Angel, and what about day creams or body lotions? Do they reduce its effect?

For optimum effect you should remove make-up and cosmetics before exposure to the red light (e.g. via a peeling). Unknown cosmetics might contain ingredients which could trigger light sensitive reactions. Normal sun cosmetics should not be used. There are special skin-care products for red light treatments, which complement and intensify its action. The use of normal day cream/body lotion after a red light treatment is not necessary, but will not have any negative effect on the results.

Some possible negative effects of ingredients (e.g. silicon oils: block the pores and prevent the skin breathing - or parabens: act like hormones and change the skin reactions) may cancel out the effects of the red light treatment.

What are the influences for skin aging?

Skin aging is influenced by numerous factors. The supply of nutrients to the epidermis (outer layer of skin) already starts to decline from the age of 25 onwards, resulting in a tired, sallow and uneven complexion. As people get older, fibroblast (cells that produce collagen) metabolism slows down, resulting in a continual decline in the collagen content of the skin. Since collagen is the primary »filler« in connective tissue, the skin loses tautness. The reduced cell regeneration also causes a loss of moisture and elasticity, ultimately resulting in the formation of wrinkles.

What about recent tattoos, piercings, liposuction or peeling?
Red light treatment is also used medically to heal wounds. But in order to completely eliminate any risk of infection, if you have open wounds, new or inflamed tattoos, piercings etc. you should wait until they have fully healed.
Unlike with tanning beds, piercings should not be removed to avoid any physical irritation of the pierced opening which might occur e.g. with newly healed piercings (reactivation).
A gentle peeling before the red light treatment provides the perfect complement, as it improves penetration into the skin.

Can I use the BEAUTY ANGEL even though I have breast implants?
If you have normal, problem-free breast implants, there should not be any risk involved in a full body treatment using the BEAUTY ANGEL. For safety reasons, you should first carry out a 5-minute test treatment in order to check how well the treatment is tolerated.

I have a tattoo. Can I still use the BEAUTY ANGEL?
There is nothing that would lead to any harmful interactions with red light sessions and tattoos. The BEAUTY ANGEL generates light energy primarily in the near infrared and visible regions of the light spectrum (non-UV). Because these are never stronger than natural sunlight, unwanted side effects like fading of tattoos are very unlikely. However, if any symptoms occur that could indicate an incompatibility, you should stop use this type of light treatment. As always, if you have any concerns about using the BEAUTY ANGEL, you should consult with your physician or other healthcare professional.

Can I have a red light treatment after or during a permanent hair removal treatment?
Permanent hair removal (laser, JPL) is carried out using a substantial input of light energy in the form of strong light beams. This irritates the skin and causes a change in its light tolerance. For safety reasons, for at least 48 hours before and at least 48 hours after light-based hair removal you should not be exposed to any red light treatment.

What about artificial nails?
No problem with these. But if nail growth is stimulated by the red light treatment then artificial nails can prove a bit of nuisance.

What do I need to look out for with varicose veins/spider veins?
The presence of varicose veins and spider veins does not prevent using the red light treatment. But there is no history of red light treatment improving them. If there is any risk of vein thrombosis or an acute vein infection then the treatment should not be carried out.

Infra-red rays are supposed to destroy fat cells. Is it true, and can it help me lose weight?
The light spectrum used by Beauty Light lies within the range of visible light. Only the Energizing Light Technology (CHP plus) also uses a part of the near-infrared range (up to about 850 nm). This range is not suitable for destroying fat cells. Although there is a study in which the combined application of near-infrared with suitable movement training led to a reduction in layers of fat compared to the control group without near-infrared.

Can a pure infrared irradiation burn me?
This is theoretically possible, but mainly if you are exposed to long-wave infrared (> 1,500 nm) which is not used at all in the Beauty Angel. The spectrum used in the Energizing Light Technology within the near-infrared range up to a maximum of 850 nm, if applied for the recommended time periods, presents no risk of burning.

Is it true that skin ageing is speeded up by infrared irradiation?
There are in-vitro tests that confirm that infrared rays do speed up skin ageing. But these are based on irradiation at strengths and in ranges which Beauty Angel does not use.

Can infrared irradiation replace a sports protein drink or if both are used can it lead to overdoses?
No, the infrared irradiation used for the Energizing Light Technology has no significant impact on the protein content of the body. There is no risk of overdosing provided the dosage instructions are followed. However, there are indications that use before and after muscle training is beneficial (loosening of muscles, reduction of late onset muscle pain, improvement of circulation etc.)

What do you meant by Energizing Light Technology (ELT)?
Many different studies have proven that the combination of visible light and near-infrared give particularly good results. The effective active spectrums of Energizing Light Technology (= ELT) are created by the combination of newly developed high-pressure bulbs with specially coated filter glasses and unique glass reflectors. The combination optimizes the results of photo bio stimulation and creates a new light experience.

What do you mean by Vibra Shape?
The complement to the light treatment using Vibra Shape provides a whole body approach to beauty and fitness. This is made possible by the vibration plate built into the support frame. This high-quality training equipment was used in several studies by the European Space Agency and today is used mainly in physiotreatment. A natural human walk is simulated using patented technology, which means that Vibra Shape, unlike other training equipment, is a 100% physiological training method.
With alternating side movements it trains all of the muscles from the legs up into the abdomen and back. Your head can be kept still during this. At the same time calories are consumed and by tautening the connective tissue cellulite can be effectively prevented. At the same time, improved circulation and micro-circulation reinforce the results of photo bio stimulation.
By the way: Combining training with collagen generation is a method for protecting joints that is highly recommended, even for athletes.
